Patti Scialfa Reveals Battle with Blood Cancer in New Documentary

2 min read

Patti Scialfa, the singer and guitarist from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and his wife, has disclosed a significant health challenge in a recent documentary. Scialfa, who has been a vital part of Springsteen’s musical journey since 1984 and married to him since 1991, shares that she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, in 2018.

The revelation comes as a part of the documentary “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band,” which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. Scialfa was notably absent from the event, and this marks the first time she has publicly addressed her health issues. According to Variety, who had a reporter at the premiere, Scialfa describes how her condition has impacted her ability to tour.

In the documentary, Scialfa explains, “This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go.” She goes on to describe her current routine, stating, “Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a treat. That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that.”

Multiple myeloma, the type of blood cancer Scialfa has been diagnosed with, can vary in its progression and impact. According to the Mayo Clinic, if the condition is slow-growing and asymptomatic, it might not require immediate treatment. For those who do need treatment, there are various methods available to help manage the disease. The clinic’s website notes, “For people with multiple myeloma who need treatment, there are a number of ways to help control the disease.”

Scialfa’s husband, Bruce Springsteen, has also faced his own health challenges recently. Last year, he postponed several tour dates due to peptic ulcer disease, noting that he was taking time to recover and continue treatment as advised by his doctors.

Despite these personal challenges, Scialfa remains a cherished member of the E Street Band, contributing to their legendary performances. The couple, who share three children, have managed to balance their demanding careers with their family life, even amidst these health struggles.

“Road Diary” is directed by Thom Zimny, known for his work on other Springsteen-related projects such as “Springsteen on Broadway” and “Western Stars.” The documentary provides an intimate look into the lives of the band and their experiences, with Scialfa’s candid health update being a poignant part of this new film.

As Scialfa continues to manage her condition, her fans and the broader music community remain supportive, appreciating her ongoing contributions to music and her openness about her personal journey.
