R. Kelly’s Daughter Shares Suicidal Thoughts Following Allegations of Childhood Abuse
1 min readDisgraced singer R. Kelly’s daughter, Buku Abi, opens up on her harrowing experiences in the new documentary “Karma: A Daughter’s Journey.” According to the 26-year-old, allegations of sexual abuse by her father during childhood led her to multiple suicide attempts and a stay in a mental health facility.
Abi, born Joann Kelly, described in an interview how she first confronted her mother with the alleged abuse in 2009. The trauma of the experience was followed by the conviction of Kelly for a criminal offense, which sent her mental health into shock.
“For a long time I was in a really hard space mentally,” Abi said in the documentary. “I hit a point in my life where multiple times, I had tried to take my own life.”
Abi’s struggles extended far beyond her own well-being. She spoke of the guilt for the impact her depression had on her younger siblings, Jaah and Robert Jr. “That was definitely scary,” Robert recalled in the documentary. “Waking up and not knowing, is my sister going to be alive?”
The documentary further touches on Abi’s complicated relationship with her father. “I didn’t know that even if he was a bad person that he would do something to me,” she reflected. “I was too scared to tell anybody.”
Abi’s revelations put up a sad insight into the lasting consequences of childhood abuse and the importance of mental health support for survivors.
