Selena Gomez Discusses How Health Challenges Will Influence Her Journey to Parenthood

2 min read

Selena Gomez has opened up about her future plans for parenthood, shedding light on how her ongoing medical issues will shape this deeply personal journey. The “Only Murders in the Building” star and singer, known for her transparency about her health struggles, recently shared her thoughts on fertility and parenthood in an interview with Vanity Fair.

In the interview, Gomez disclosed that her medical conditions have affected her ability to conceive and carry a child. “I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while,” Gomez revealed.

Despite these challenges, Gomez is optimistic about her options. She highlighted that surrogacy and adoption are viable paths for her. “Surrogacy and adoption are huge possibilities for me,” she said. “I’m really thankful that there are wonderful people willing to help in both ways.” She acknowledges that while this wasn’t the path she initially envisioned, she’s found peace with the situation.

“It’s not necessarily the way I thought it would happen,” Gomez admitted. “I imagined it would unfold as it does for most people. But I’m in a much better place now.” She expressed gratitude for alternative routes to motherhood, noting, “I’m excited for what that journey will look like, even though it will be different from what I originally imagined.”

Gomez emphasized that, regardless of the route she takes, the outcome will be deeply personal. “At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how it happens because it will be mine. It will be my baby,” she said.

The challenges Gomez faces are linked to her broader health struggles. She first disclosed in 2015 that she had been diagnosed with lupus, a chronic autoimmune condition that leads the immune system to attack healthy tissue, resulting in inflammation and pain throughout the body. The Lupus Foundation of America describes it as a potentially debilitating disease that can affect various organs and systems.

In 2017, Gomez shared that her lupus had progressed to the point where she needed a kidney transplant, a life-saving procedure made possible thanks to her friend and fellow actress Francia Raisa, who donated one of her kidneys. Gomez’s health journey continued in 2020, when she revealed a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, adding another layer to her health challenges.

These experiences have been documented in Gomez’s 2022 film, “My Mind & Me,” which explores her struggles with mental and physical health, providing a candid look at her personal battles and triumphs.

Through her openness, Gomez continues to shed light on the realities of living with chronic health conditions and their impact on personal goals and aspirations. Her reflections on parenthood reveal a resilience and adaptability that she hopes will inspire others facing similar challenges.
