Tyler, The Creator lands first UK number one album

3 min read

Tyler, The Creator has secured his first UK number one album with his latest release, “Chromakopia,” despite it being available for only four days out of the week. The Official Chart Company begins tracking sales and streams at 00:01 on Fridays, a time typically favored for new music releases from major labels.

In a departure from industry norms, Tyler chose to launch his eighth studio album on a Monday at 06:00 EST, three days after the week’s chart tracking commenced. The unconventional timing reflects his unique approach to music release strategies. Tyler has previously expressed his belief that weekday releases could lead to more attentive listening, arguing that people are often distracted during weekends, whether at parties or while unwinding. In a conversation with Canadian music journalist Nardwuar last year, he stated, “I think if you put it out during the week, man, that commute to work, or that commute to school… you really have that hour, 30 minutes to really dive in and really listen.”

However, Tyler also acknowledged that this approach might be a “dumb idea” since it risks missing out on nearly half of the week’s potential streams and sales. Traditionally, albums were released on Mondays, but the industry shifted to Fridays in July 2015 as part of a global initiative called New Music Fridays, aimed at aligning releases with consumer behavior that favors weekend listening.

Music chart analyst Chris Molanphy supports Tyler’s perspective, stating, “I never loved that [weekend release] date.” He highlighted that the competition for attention on weekends is fierce, particularly with films also releasing on Fridays, which further complicates visibility for new music.

Despite the current dominance of streaming, physical and download sales play a significant role in an album’s chart performance due to their weighting in chart calculations. If “Chromakopia” also tops the U.S. charts, it will mark Tyler’s third number one album, a notable achievement considering he has never had a top ten single.

Tyler’s marketing acumen is evident in his approach to album sales. His website features various vinyl versions of “Chromakopia,” bundled with original merchandise, appealing to collectors and fans alike. Molanphy remarked, “He’s a marketing genius. Tyler knows how to package his albums; his covers are beautiful to look at.” This strategy is particularly effective as a report last year indicated that only half of vinyl consumers own a record player, highlighting the importance of eye-catching cover art.

Tyler’s previous album, “Igor,” featuring its striking pink cover, remained on the Billboard vinyl chart for an impressive 160 weeks. Over his career, he has won the Grammy for Best Rap Album twice, and four of his earlier albums reached the top ten in the UK.

Despite the success of “Chromakopia,” not everyone views the Monday release as a wise move. Music journalist Eamonn Forde labeled it a “marketing gimmick,” arguing that streaming’s effectiveness hinges on building momentum throughout the entire chart week. He pointed out, “Every minute counts,” suggesting that while Tyler’s strategy may work for him, it could pose challenges for other artists trying to replicate his approach.

Molanphy also cautioned that while hip-hop has a history of experimenting with sales tactics, not every artist possesses the same draw or established fan base as Tyler. “It’s possible it will set a model for other artists to follow, but not everybody is Tyler, The Creator,” he noted.

In this week’s singles chart, Gigi Perez claimed the number one spot with “Sailor Song,” ending Sabrina Carpenter’s nine-week reign with her hit “Taste.” As the music industry evolves, Tyler’s innovative strategies may pave the way for new trends, but the effectiveness of such moves will likely vary among artists.
