Zooey Deschanel is mourning the loss of her childhood home, which was destroyed in the ongoing Palisades Fire that has been ravaging Los Angeles County. The actor, best known for her role in Elf, shared her grief on social media, expressing how much the property, which had been in her family for decades, meant to her.
Deschanel described the home as “a marvel of 1920s Spanish revival architecture” and “one of the oldest homes in the Palisades,” noting that it was not a mansion but was “cozy and lovely and unique and perfect” in her eyes. The actor recalled the home’s charm and its significance to her, calling it a place filled with “too many incredible memories to count.” She posted a collection of before-and-after images of the house’s facade, as well as family photos, including several with her sister, actress Emily Deschanel.
In her emotional message, Deschanel reflected on some of the best moments she had at the home, including holiday dinners and celebrations such as baby showers. She expressed the heartbreak of seeing these cherished memories “vanish into thin air” as the fire destroyed the house. Despite this loss, she acknowledged that she and her family were not alone in their grief, as many others in the area were also affected by the fires.
Deschanel mentioned the ongoing fires in nearby areas, including the Eaton Fire near Altadena, and noted that the streets of her childhood in Pacific Palisades “have been all but erased.” She emphasized that “so many people have lost so much” in the devastation caused by the flames.
Amidst the sorrow, Deschanel expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support she and her family have received. She thanked the community for showing kindness, from firefighters who have been tirelessly working to control the blazes, to friends and strangers who have offered emotional and practical support. “You have texted and called, come to visit, you have made us meals, you have sent clothes to my parents who left with nothing,” she wrote. “Your kindness is the salve that has made this bearable.”
She also acknowledged the generosity of strangers who have uplifted her family’s spirits with thoughtful gestures. “You are the true meaning of community,” she said. “Thank you all for showing us the goodness in your hearts. You have no idea how much it means to us.”
Deschanel is among several celebrities and residents of Los Angeles who have lost their homes in the devastating fires. Other well-known figures, such as Joshua Jackson and Milo Ventimiglia, have also been affected. Thousands of residents in the region remain under evacuation orders as firefighters continue to battle the blazes, which have claimed the lives of at least 27 people.
As the fire crews work to contain the flames, there is hope that they will make significant progress before another round of fire-fueling winds is expected next week. However, evacuees anxious to return to their homes face an uncertain timeline, with hazardous materials still being cleared from the affected areas.
