Kitengela Residents Benefit from Free Medical Services

On August 27, 2024, over 800 residents of Kitengela, Kajiado County, were offered a range of complimentary health services at a medical camp organized by the local Rotary Club. The initiative provided vital health screenings and treatments to the community, addressing various medical needs without charge.

The services available included screenings for cervical and prostate cancer, HIV counseling and testing, eye exams, family planning, dental care, nutritional advice, and urinalysis. Additionally, the camp provided treatment for tuberculosis, diabetes, skin conditions, and common ailments such as colds and flu.

Judy Maruru, a board member of the Kitengela Rotary Club, emphasized that enhancing community health is a key goal for the organization. She stressed the importance of increasing access to medical services to achieve this goal. Maruru urged residents to seek early diagnoses rather than waiting for symptoms to appear, as early detection can significantly reduce medical costs and improve outcomes.

“Regular medical checkups are crucial for early diagnosis and effective treatment,” Maruru explained. “I encourage everyone to make regular visits to healthcare facilities to stay on top of their health.”

The camp revealed some prevalent health issues in the community, including eye and chest infections, which Maruru attributed to the dry and dusty conditions in Kitengela. The camp also identified cases of acute malnutrition affecting children under five years old, the elderly, and pregnant or lactating women.

Milka Nabongo, a recipient of the camp’s services, expressed her gratitude, noting that she received treatment for a persistent skin condition. “I am very thankful for the free medication. It has been a relief to finally address a problem that has troubled me for months,” Nabongo said.

Andrew Kimani, another beneficiary, highlighted the significance of such medical camps, especially for those struggling with financial constraints. He received free screening and treatment for hypertension and advocated for the continuation of similar initiatives. “Given the high cost of healthcare, many people struggle to afford hospital visits and medications. Free medical camps are a valuable resource that should be held regularly to help those in need,” Kimani stated.

The free medical camp was made possible through collaboration with Carmelitas Misioneras, the Kajiado County Government, and St. Theresa Dispensary. This partnership played a crucial role in delivering these essential services to the Kitengela community, demonstrating a collective effort to improve public health and accessibility.
