Donald Trump is launching into the final week of the presidential race with a high-profile rally at Madison Square Garden, aiming to capitalize on his showmanship to fill the iconic venue. This event is not just about New York City; it’s also a strategic move to resonate with voters across seven crucial battleground states via television and social media.

Returning to his hometown, Trump enters deep-blue territory that is generally considered unwinnable for Republicans. However, recent discontent among voters and challenges faced by local Democratic leaders could provide a glimmer of hope for endangered GOP incumbents in the suburbs surrounding the city.

This rally marks the latest in a series of Trump’s visits to traditionally blue states, which have included stops in California, Long Island, and Chicago. During these events, he has used stark rhetoric to attribute rising crime rates and the influx of migrants to his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris. “I will rescue every town across America that has been invaded and conquered,” Trump declared recently in Las Vegas.

The choice of Madison Square Garden for this rally is significant, steeped in political history. The venue has hosted numerous presidents, from Grover Cleveland to Franklin D. Roosevelt, and has been the site of both Republican and Democratic national conventions, including the GOP gathering in 2004. Notably, it was here that Marilyn Monroe famously serenaded John F. Kennedy on his birthday in 1962. However, the venue’s history also includes divisive events, such as the pro-Nazi rally in 1939 and George Wallace’s law-and-order speech in 1968.

For Trump, this rally symbolizes more than a campaign event; it is a personal milestone. He has often expressed a desire to perform on this prominent stage, imagining his name alongside legendary entertainers like Billy Joel and Elton John.

While New York is a solidly Democratic state, Trump has repeatedly suggested he could reclaim it for Republicans. “We think there’s a chance of winning New York for the first time in many decades,” he stated on Fox News Radio, despite the last Republican presidential nominee to win the state being Ronald Reagan in 1984. Additionally, it has been over two decades since a Republican secured a statewide office, with George Pataki being the last in 2002.

Nonetheless, GOP strategists are optimistic that the rally could energize vulnerable Republican lawmakers in New York as they head into the November elections. Some lawmakers joined Trump for a tele-rally hosted by Rep. Elise Stefanik to promote early voting. However, none of them are listed among the speakers for the Madison Square Garden event.

This rally is expected to be one of Trump’s largest fundraising efforts to date. Various donor packages are available, including VIP suites and exclusive access opportunities. According to sources, the Trump campaign anticipates a significant financial boost from this event, with some estimating it could generate considerable revenue.

The event will feature a notable lineup of speakers, including Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., House Speaker Mike Johnson, and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, among others. Several popular social media figures and musicians who have endorsed Trump are also expected to attend.

To mitigate concerns about potential disruption from Trump critics, the campaign has implemented measures to prevent individuals from registering for tickets without genuine intent to attend.

Although Trump will not be in one of the seven key states—Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—that both parties believe will determine the outcome of the November 5 election, his team anticipates significant media coverage from the rally. “It’s New York City. It’s the biggest media market in the world,” a campaign advisor emphasized, highlighting the rally’s potential impact on the broader campaign landscape.
