Vance Criticizes Walz and Harris Amidst Tightening Election Race

3 min read

Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance has intensified his criticism of Democratic rival Tim Walz, labeling the Minnesota governor as “weird” in a recent interview. Vance’s remarks come as the race for the vice presidency heats up, with the stakes becoming increasingly significant following changes in the Democratic ticket.

Vance scrutinized Walz’s behavior during a rally in Philadelphia where Walz, introduced as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, was seen shaking his wife’s hand before hugging her. Vance contrasted this with his own public display of affection towards his wife, asserting that Walz’s actions seemed awkward and indicative of a deeper discomfort. He suggested that Walz and Harris’s awkwardness was a reflection of their discomfort with their policy positions rather than genuine personal issues.

Vance dismissed Walz’s earlier criticism of him and former President Donald Trump as “schoolyard bully stuff.” Walz had previously characterized Trump and Vance as “just weird,” a description Vance attributes partly to remarks he made in 2021 about “childless cat ladies” in the U.S. government. While he acknowledged that his comments were controversial, Vance claimed they were taken out of context and did not reflect any disrespect towards Harris or Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, both of whom have families.

As the election nears, Vance noted a significant shift in the race dynamics, particularly with President Joe Biden’s departure and Kamala Harris’s emergence as the new Democratic nominee. The change has led to a tighter contest than anticipated, with Trump and Vance now facing a different set of challenges. Vance pointed out that Harris now bears the responsibility for the policies of the Biden administration, which he argued are unpopular with many Americans. He criticized Harris’s policy positions and suggested that she, rather than Biden, has been the primary decision-maker in the White House.

In addition to questioning Harris’s judgment, Vance targeted Walz’s military service record. He accused Walz of dishonesty regarding his service, alleging that Walz had misrepresented his military experiences for political gain. Walz, who served in the Army National Guard for 24 years and was deployed to Italy in support of the U.S. war effort in Afghanistan, has faced criticism for claims that he had “carried weapons in war.” A spokesperson for Harris’s campaign clarified that Walz had misspoken.

Vance also alleged that Walz had avoided a deployment to Iraq by retiring from the military shortly before the deployment was scheduled. He criticized Walz for allegedly lying about his reasons for retiring and using his military service as a political advantage. Vance stressed that his criticism was not about Walz’s service itself but about perceived dishonesty related to his service record.

Furthermore, Vance expressed skepticism about Harris’s decision to select Walz as her running mate, calling it a lapse in judgment. He challenged Harris to address the allegations of dishonesty directly rather than leaving it to campaign spokespeople.

On the topic of abortion, Vance stated that a Trump administration would not seek to block access to the abortion drug mifepristone. Instead, Trump would allow states to set their own abortion policies, resulting in a diverse landscape of regulations across the country. Vance expressed sympathy for women facing difficult pregnancies, such as the case of Kate Cox from Texas, who had to travel out of state for an abortion due to a serious fetal condition. While Vance affirmed Trump’s commitment to respecting state decisions on abortion, he made it clear that the former president’s approach would be to let voters determine these policies, rather than imposing a federal standard.

As the election approaches, Vance and Trump are working to position themselves against the Democratic ticket while navigating the shifting political landscape and addressing various controversies.
