Aaron Rodgers returned to MetLife Stadium for the first time since his season-ending injury in Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season. In a triumphant comeback, the 40-year-old quarterback led the New York Jets to a decisive 24-3 win against the New England Patriots on Thursday night.
Rodgers showcased remarkable agility and poise, effectively navigating the Patriots’ defense. He completed 27 of 35 passes for 281 yards, throwing two touchdowns—one to Allen Lazard and the other to Garrett Wilson. In addition, he rushed for 18 yards on three attempts, while Breece Hall contributed a rushing touchdown to solidify the victory.
This game marked a historic moment for Wilson, who became the first wide receiver drafted in the first round to catch a touchdown from Rodgers, despite it being the veteran’s 480th career touchdown pass.
Throughout the game, the Jets fans enthusiastically chanted Rodgers’ name, reflecting their support and excitement for his return. After the game, he described the evening as a “really special night.”
“I felt really good out there,” Rodgers said. “In pregame, I was feeling great, and I’ve been progressing. I mentioned after Week 1 that it would be a process, and this felt like the first step in playing like I know I’m capable of. I felt like I was myself from a few years ago.”
Reflecting on his return to MetLife Stadium, Rodgers noted, “I had a good calm about it. It was emotional to come back, but I think the first week took a lot of the fears away. Tonight, I felt free playing.”
The Jets struggled offensively last season while Rodgers was sidelined, but this game indicated a significant improvement. The offense clicked well under his leadership, complemented by a strong running game. The duo of Breece Hall and Braelon Allen combined for 27 carries, amassing 109 rushing yards. The revamped offensive line provided ample protection, giving Rodgers the time he needed to execute plays.
In contrast, the Patriots faced a challenging evening, outperformed by their AFC East rivals. Despite the loss, fans were eager to see rookie quarterback Drake Maye, the third overall pick in the 2024 draft, make his regular-season debut. Maye, who served as the backup to veteran Jacoby Brissett, was brought in midway through the fourth quarter after Brissett struggled against a relentless Jets defense.
In his brief appearance, Maye completed four of eight passes for 22 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. He also rushed twice for 12 yards but was met with a tough introduction to the NFL, including being sacked twice by the Jets’ defense.
The game served as a reminder of the challenges the Patriots face, as they were thoroughly outmatched in both offensive and defensive play. On the other hand, the Jets’ victory highlights the potential they have with Rodgers back at the helm, especially as they aim for a stronger season compared to last year.
With this victory, the Jets look to build momentum for the rest of the season, while the Patriots will need to regroup and address their struggles as they move forward. For Rodgers, this night was not just about the win, but also a personal triumph, demonstrating his resilience and ability to perform at a high level after a difficult year.
