3 min read

Former NFL stars Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson and James Harrison are set to square off in an exhibition mixed martial arts (MMA) bout next year in New Orleans, a match that has generated considerable buzz on social media. The announcement was made by Johnson on Wednesday, building excitement for the fight, which is scheduled to take place just ahead of Super Bowl LIX.

Johnson expressed his enthusiasm on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I’m so excited.” However, there appears to be some disagreement regarding the length of the fight. Initially, Johnson indicated it would be a three-round contest, but Harrison later clarified that the bout will actually consist of five rounds.

The two former athletes have already begun trading playful jabs in the lead-up to their match. Johnson confidently declared, “I’m gonna beat yo a** in round 1, so don’t worry about the other 4. I’m standing on business.” Harrison, not one to back down, fired back, “You not gonna be able to stand once I get done with you.” This back-and-forth has added to the anticipation surrounding the event.

This upcoming fight will not be Johnson’s first experience in the ring. In 2021, he participated in a four-round boxing match against MMA fighter Brian Maxwell as part of the undercard for the highly publicized Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Logan Paul event. Johnson’s transition to the fighting world has intrigued fans, particularly given his impressive football career.

During his 11 years in the NFL, Johnson primarily played for the Cincinnati Bengals and concluded his career with the New England Patriots. Throughout his time in the league, he amassed impressive statistics, with 766 receptions for 11,059 yards and 67 touchdowns over 166 games. Johnson earned Pro Bowl honors six times and was named a first-team All-Pro three times, showcasing his elite status as a wide receiver.

In contrast, Harrison’s career spanned 15 years, most of which he spent with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Renowned as one of the most formidable defenders in the NFL, Harrison won two Super Bowl championships with the Steelers and was named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2008. He was also a five-time Pro Bowler and received first-team All-Pro accolades twice. After his time with the Steelers, he had a brief stint with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2013 before returning to Pittsburgh. Harrison played his final NFL game with the New England Patriots in 2017 before retiring.

As the countdown to their fight begins, fans are eager to see how the rivalry unfolds in the ring. The exhibition match not only marks a unique chapter for both athletes but also highlights the growing trend of former professional athletes stepping into combat sports. The anticipation surrounding this matchup continues to build, with both Johnson and Harrison promising an entertaining spectacle for their fans.

With their storied football backgrounds, the fight promises to be a fascinating clash of styles. Johnson’s flair and charisma combined with Harrison’s fierce competitive nature are sure to create an electrifying atmosphere in New Orleans. As they prepare for this unusual confrontation, the sporting world will undoubtedly be watching closely, curious to see how these two legends of the gridiron fare in the arena of mixed martial arts.
