Cousins Shatters Franchise Record in Thrilling Overtime Victory Over Buccaneers

3 min read

In a breathtaking display of skill and resilience, Kirk Cousins shattered the Atlanta Falcons’ franchise record by throwing for 509 yards on Thursday Night Football, leading his team to a thrilling 36-30 overtime victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The game reached a dramatic climax when Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo drilled a 52-yard field goal as time expired in regulation, tying the score and forcing overtime. Cousins then took control, completing all three of his passes for 69 yards, culminating in a spectacular 45-yard touchdown pass to KhaDarel Hodge. This marked Cousins’ fourth touchdown of the night, sealing an unforgettable win for Atlanta.

Cousins’ performance not only set a new franchise benchmark, surpassing the previous record of 503 yards held by Matt Ryan since 2016, but it also came on the night Ryan was honored with induction into the Falcons’ Ring of Honor. The 36-year-old quarterback, who recently signed an $180 million contract with Atlanta after a successful stint with the Minnesota Vikings, also eclipsed his own personal best of 460 yards from the previous season. Additionally, he tied his career high with four touchdown passes in a game. According to NFL Research, Cousins joins the elite company of Tom Brady as the only quarterbacks to achieve over 500 passing yards and four or more touchdown passes in a primetime game.

“What a night,” Cousins remarked after the game. “I’m exhausted.” His comments reflect not just the physical toll of the contest, but the emotional highs and lows both he and his team experienced throughout the game.

Remarkably, the Falcons have managed to come from behind in the final minute of the fourth quarter in all five of their games this season, winning three of them. This feat makes them the first team in NFL history to achieve such a comeback in the opening weeks of a season.

“I’m proud of the way our team fought,” Cousins expressed. “I’m proud of the resiliency we showed to just keep going and keep playing through things. I’m just proud of the grit. That’s what this league takes, and we were gritty tonight, so I’m pleased to come away with a win.”

Both teams started strong, quickly finding the end zone on their opening drives. Cousins kicked things off for Atlanta with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Drake London. In response, Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield connected with Mike Evans for a two-yard touchdown, followed by a 53-yard field goal from Chase McLaughlin, putting Tampa Bay on the board.

Cousins responded with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Darnell Mooney in the second quarter, regaining the lead for Atlanta. Mayfield, however, had an impressive night himself, throwing two more touchdowns before halftime. A late third-quarter field goal from McLaughlin gave the Buccaneers a 27-20 lead heading into the final quarter.

With just over 13 minutes remaining, Cousins found Mooney again, this time at the 10-yard line. Mooney managed to evade a tackle and sprint into the end zone to tie the game. However, McLaughlin’s third field goal of the evening pushed Tampa Bay back in front at 30-27.

The Falcons weren’t done yet. With 1:14 left on the clock, Cousins orchestrated a quick drive, completing five passes to advance to the Buccaneers’ 29-yard line. In a nail-biting finish, Koo’s field goal sent the game into overtime, allowing Cousins to cement his place in franchise history.

In overtime, Cousins demonstrated his poise and precision once again, finding Hodge at the 40-yard line. Hodge broke a tackle and burst through the secondary, sprinting into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. This remarkable finish highlighted both Cousins’ skill and the tenacity of a Falcons team that continues to defy expectations.

With this victory, Atlanta not only secured a memorable win but also demonstrated their unwavering spirit, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
