New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson made a case for the catch of the year on Thursday night, helping the team secure a 21-13 victory over the Houston Texans and snap a five-game losing streak.
The highlight of the game came midway through the fourth quarter when Wilson showcased his incredible athleticism by reaching back with one hand in the end zone to snatch a pass from Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Texans cornerback Kamari Lassiter could only watch as Wilson contorted his body to make the spectacular grab. Remarkably, he managed to get his left shin and right foot down in the end zone while maintaining possession of the ball. Initially ruled an incomplete pass, the call was overturned after Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich challenged the decision, resulting in a touchdown that electrified the MetLife Stadium crowd.
Wilson’s catch drew comparisons to one of the most iconic plays in NFL history: Odell Beckham Jr.’s legendary one-handed grab for the New York Giants against the Dallas Cowboys in 2014. After the game, Wilson reflected on the significance of the moment. “(Beckham) got two feet down, the ball was gonna land out of bounds, and it was Odell, man,” Wilson said. “So for it to even come up in that convo, I’m blessed. I’m honored.”
Ulbrich also praised Wilson’s remarkable catch, stating, “Oh my goodness. I mean, I was talking to the ref when they were reviewing it, I was like: ‘Just for the sake of posterity, you have to say that’s in just so it goes down in history.’ I mean it would rival the Odell catch. It was amazing.”
Reflecting on his thought process during the play, Wilson explained, “Honestly, you’re not thinking about much, ‘How can I make a play?’ Give myself a chance to make a play. Aaron believed in me. Once the ball was going up, it’s like you’ve got no other choice but to go and try to do what you can do. I’m glad they switched the call; I wasn’t sure, so it was a cool play. We needed it. At the end of the day, I pride myself on coming through when we need it.”
This catch was not WilWilson’s son’s only highlight of the night. Earlier in the game, he had already made a one-handed grab to secure a 21-yard touchdown, showcasing his skills as a key player for the Jets.
The Jets’ victory was crucial, especially after a sluggish start in the first half where both teams struggled offensively. The first points came with 3:21 left in the half, as Texans running back Joe Mixon scored on a three-yard touchdown run. Prior to that, both defenses had stifled their opponents, leading to a series of punts.
The Jets thought they had taken the lead early in the second quarter when rookie Malachi Corley ran 19 yards into the end zone. However, a review revealed that he had dropped the ball before crossing the goal line, resulting in a turnover that gifted the Texans possession.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers had an uncharacteristically rough first half, completing just 7 of 14 passes for a mere 32 yards—the lowest first-half total of his career. However, Wilson’s touchdown at the beginning of the third quarter tied the game and shifted the momentum in the Jets’ favor.
As the game progressed, the Jets extended their lead when Davante Adams caught his first touchdown pass for New York, a 37-yard throw from Rodgers. Although the Texans managed to score a late field goal, they were unable to mount a comeback, dropping their record to 6-3 while the Jets improved to 3-6.
After the game, Wilson expressed relief and satisfaction. “It feels good,” he said. “We definitely just wanted to get back in the win column. Losing five straight feels how you would expect. It doesn’t feel good. We’re better than that, most importantly, and it was time to go prove it.”
With their losing streak now behind them, the Jets will look to build on this momentum in the coming weeks, buoyed by Wilson’s outstanding performance and the electrifying catch that could define their season.
