Guedes Shines with Two Goals as Wolves Defeat Burnley in Carabao Cup

2 min read

Goncalo Guedes made a triumphant return to goal-scoring form for Wolverhampton Wanderers, netting twice in their 2-0 victory over Burnley to advance to the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The Portuguese forward, who had been on loan at Benfica and Villarreal since his last goal for Wolves in January 2023, opened the scoring with a clinical finish. Guedes converted a cross from Brazilian debutant Pedro Lima, demonstrating his sharp instincts in the box.

He doubled his tally with another impressive strike, latching onto a precise through-ball from Daniel Podence and deftly lifting the ball over Burnley’s goalkeeper, Vaclav Hladky. Guedes exited the pitch to a warm standing ovation with 15 minutes remaining, marking a memorable night for him and Wolves fans alike.

Hladky, despite conceding both goals, had kept Burnley in the game with a remarkable double save earlier in the match. He initially denied a curling shot from Podence and then reacted swiftly to push Lima’s follow-up effort onto the post.

Goncalo Guedes had not scored at Molineux since November 2022

However, Wolves’ evening was marred by an injury concern. Midfielder Boubacar Traore was forced off late in the first half with an injury. This setback occurred on a day when Wolves were reported to be in advanced negotiations for a £21 million transfer of Fluminense midfielder Andre, 23.

Burnley, managed by Scott Parker, gave debuts to three new signings—Hannibal Mejbri, Bashir Humphreys, and Joe Worrall. Despite the new additions, the Championship side struggled to make an impact and failed to register a single shot on target throughout the match.

The game highlighted Guedes’ pivotal role in Wolves’ attack and underscored the challenges faced by Burnley in their quest to compete at a higher level. As Wolves progress in the Carabao Cup, they will hope to build on this performance and address any injury concerns moving forward.
