2 min read

Black Caviar, the renowned Australian racehorse known as the “Wonder from Down Under,” has passed away at the age of 17. The mare, who retired undefeated, was celebrated for her extraordinary racing career and significant impact on the sport.

From 2009 to 2013, Black Caviar achieved an unparalleled record of 25 consecutive victories, a testament to her dominance on the racetrack. Her career highlights include a memorable win at Royal Ascot in 2012, where jockey Luke Nolen guided her to victory despite easing up before the finish line. This race showcased not only her exceptional speed but also her ability to win under pressure.

Throughout her career, Black Caviar was recognized as the world’s best sprinter on four occasions and was named Australian Racehorse of the Year three times. Her fame extended beyond the racing world; she even graced the cover of Vogue magazine, highlighting her status as a national icon in Australia.

“It’s a hollow feeling; she meant a great deal to us,” said Nolen, who rode Black Caviar to 22 of her 25 victories. He reflected on her significance, noting that she was not only a crucial part of his career but also a cherished figure in the world of racing. “She was one of our equine heroes,” he added.

Black Caviar had been dealing with laminitis, a painful condition affecting a horse’s hooves. Despite her ongoing health issues, she gave birth to a colt foal by the sire Snitzel shortly before her death. Unfortunately, her condition deteriorated, leading to the difficult decision to put her to sleep on the eve of her 18th birthday.

Peter Moody, Black Caviar’s Melbourne-based trainer, expressed the emotional bond formed with the horse. “It’s impossible not to get attached to most animals, let alone one like her,” Moody said. He explained that Black Caviar was euthanized on humane grounds shortly after the birth of her foal.

Black Caviar’s legacy lives on through her remarkable achievements and the joy she brought to fans worldwide. Her impact on horse racing and her place in Australian sports history remain indelible, marking the end of an era for a truly exceptional racehorse.
