Manchester United has officially announced the appointment of Rúben Amorim as the club’s new first-team head coach, following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag. Amorim, a former Portugal international, arrives from Sporting CP, where he served as manager since March 2020, pending the completion of work visa requirements.
Amorim made an immediate impact in his first full season at Sporting, leading the team to its first Portuguese league title in 19 years during the 2020-21 campaign. He followed up that success by securing a second league title last season. The 39-year-old has also celebrated victories in the Portuguese League Cup, winning it twice with Sporting and once with his former club Braga in 2020.
In a statement, Manchester United praised Amorim as “one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football.” His contract with the club is set to run until June 2027, with an option for an additional year. Sporting CP announced that United will pay €11 million (approximately $11.95 million) as a release fee for Amorim’s services.
Ten Hag’s departure followed a disappointing 2-1 loss to West Ham, which left United languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, having collected only 11 points from nine matches. Under Ten Hag, United secured both the 2023 League Cup and the 2024 FA Cup but struggled in the league, finishing eighth last season—their lowest ever Premier League position.
In the interim, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will lead the team after a recent 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the League Cup, until Amorim takes over.
United’s swift action to secure Amorim reflects a bold move for both the club and the coach. Under INEOS ownership, this decision signifies a renewed commitment to stable leadership following the tumultuous management of Ten Hag. Amorim was a sought-after talent, with interest from several top European clubs, including Barcelona and Bayern Munich, before they appointed Hansi Flick and Vincent Kompany, respectively. He was also linked to Liverpool and held talks with West Ham about succeeding David Moyes.
This appointment represents a significant step up for Amorim, enhancing his profile in the game. Known for his tactical acumen and engaging management style, he has been praised as “a players’ coach.” Pedro Pinto, CEO of Empower Sports, commented on Amorim’s ability to connect with players, highlighting his direct communication and motivational skills, which are essential in modern football.
Many Sporting CP fans were saddened by his departure, especially as the team was on track to win back-to-back league titles for the first time in 70 years. However, the allure of managing one of the world’s biggest clubs proved irresistible.
Amorim is not entirely new to Manchester United. Six years ago, he completed an internship under the then-manager José Mourinho. He will find familiar faces in the squad, including club captain Bruno Fernandes, who was a key player for Sporting before his transfer to United, and Diogo Dalot, along with Uruguayan Manuel Ugarte, another former protégé of Amorim’s.
Fernandes spoke highly of Amorim’s impact on Sporting, saying, “Since Mr. Amorim arrived at Sporting, they became one of the teams that play better and most consistent football.” His success at Sporting, especially in breaking a long trophy drought, underscores the quality of his coaching.
Amorim faces a daunting task as he takes the helm at United. Currently, the club trails behind rivals Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal, sitting in a disappointing 14th place in the Premier League. However, there are still opportunities for silverware in the Europa League and domestic cup competitions.
In the short term, Amorim must adapt his successful 3-4-3 system to the existing squad’s dynamics. Despite the team’s struggles, there is potential in the roster, and it will be critical for him to leverage his man-management skills and tactical expertise to unlock their capabilities.
As Pinto notes, the club needs to regain the winning culture established by Sir Alex Ferguson, emphasizing discipline and determination. He stressed the importance of backing Amorim and providing him with the resources and support necessary to succeed.
Rúben Amorim has already demonstrated his ability to rejuvenate a club, and now the question remains: can he bring that magic to Manchester United and lead them back to the pinnacle of football? Time will tell if he can orchestrate a revival at one of the sport’s most storied institutions.
