Eugene “Mercury” Morris, a two-time Super Bowl champion and a key player in the Miami Dolphins’ perfect 1972 season, has passed away at the age of 77. His son, Troy-Jeffrey Morris, announced the news on social media, highlighting the profound impact his father had both on and off the field.

Morris was known for his exceptional talent and passion for the game, which earned him three Pro Bowl selections and solidified his legacy among football’s elite. Beyond his impressive athletic achievements, he was a devoted father, loving brother, and loyal friend, leaving a lasting impression on the Miami community throughout his life.

During the historic undefeated season of 1972, Morris achieved a career-high of 1,000 rushing yards and scored 12 touchdowns. He made history alongside Hall of Fame fullback Larry Csonka, as they became the first duo in NFL history to each rush for over 1,000 yards in the same season. The following year, Morris continued to excel, rushing for 954 yards and 10 touchdowns, contributing significantly to the Dolphins’ consecutive Super Bowl victories.

The Miami Dolphins released a statement acknowledging Morris’s impactful career and contributions to the team. “Morris left a lasting impact through his dynamic play, personality, and record-breaking performances,” they said. “He loved the Dolphins, the fans, and the community of South Florida, and he will forever be remembered as one of the greatest players to don the aqua and orange.”

Morris was drafted by the Dolphins in the third round of the 1969 NFL Draft and spent seven of his eight NFL seasons in Miami. Over his career, he amassed 4,133 rushing yards and scored 31 touchdowns, ranking him fourth on Miami’s all-time rushing list. He trails only Csonka, Ricky Williams, and Ronnie Brown in career rushing yards for the franchise.

In 2013, Morris was honored with a spot on the Dolphins’ Walk of Fame, recognizing his contributions to the team and the sport. His achievements extend beyond mere statistics; they embody a spirit of excellence and dedication that resonates with fans and players alike.

As friends, family, and teammates remember Morris, they celebrate not only his incredible athletic prowess but also the warmth and kindness he shared with those around him. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations in the world of football and beyond.
