3 min read

Paolo Banchero scored a career-high 50 points in the win over the Pacers.

In a standout performance on Monday night, Paolo Banchero of the Orlando Magic showcased his immense talent by scoring the NBA’s first 50-point game of the season during a thrilling victory over the Indiana Pacers. The 2022-23 Rookie of the Year finished the game with an impressive 50 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists, shooting a remarkable 61.5% from the field. His performance was instrumental in leading the Magic to a 119-115 home win.

Banchero’s first half was particularly electrifying, as he poured in 37 points, tying the franchise record for points scored in a half. Remarkably, this total matched the combined points of the entire Pacers starting lineup during the same period. The 21-year-old, who was the top pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, also made history by becoming the second-youngest player in league history to achieve a 50-point, 10-rebound, and five-assist game, trailing only the legendary LeBron James.

Reflecting on his achievement, Banchero shared his exhaustion, saying, “Man, I’m tired. I’m tired as hell, but it was a hell of a game. It felt like I was in an open gym, just working on my game. Every shot felt like it was going in, and it’s a good feeling when you’ve got a day like that. Not every game is going to be like that, but I’m glad today was.”

Supporting Banchero’s stellar performance was teammate Jalen Suggs, who contributed 25 points, five rebounds, and seven assists, helping the Magic improve to a 3-1 record to start the season. For the Pacers, Pascal Siakam led the team with 26 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Tyrese Haliburton also showed signs of improvement after a slow start, finishing with 19 points, nine rebounds, and ten assists, though the Pacers fell to 1-3.

Celtics Maintain Unbeaten Streak

Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics continued their unbeaten run by defeating the Milwaukee Bucks 119-108 at home, extending their record to 4-0. The game remained competitive until Payton Pritchard hit a dramatic long-range buzzer-beater at the end of the third quarter, pushing the Celtics’ lead to eight points. The team then went on a 7-0 run to begin the fourth quarter, sealing the victory.

Pritchard was a key contributor off the bench, scoring 28 points on 8-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc. Jaylen Brown led the Celtics with 30 points, while Jason Tatum had a quieter night, scoring just 15 points on 37.5% shooting.

The loss marked a challenging start for the Bucks, who now sit at 1-3 following three consecutive defeats. Concerns have arisen regarding the decision to hire Doc Rivers as head coach last season after the firing of Adrian Griffin, especially given the team’s struggles early in the season. Damian Lillard was the standout performer for the Bucks, scoring a game-high 33 points, along with seven rebounds and seven assists. Giannis Antetokounmpo also made an impact with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists.

Suns Hand Lakers First Loss

In another exciting matchup, the Phoenix Suns handed the Los Angeles Lakers their first defeat of the season with a close 109-105 victory. The Suns, who were looking to avenge their opening night loss to the Lakers, overcame an 18-point deficit in the first quarter.

Devin Booker led the Suns with a game-high 33 points, while Kevin Durant added 30 points to help secure the win. For the Lakers, Anthony Davis was the top performer, finishing with 29 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks. However, LeBron James had a disappointing outing, scoring only 11 points on 21.4% shooting.

Despite the loss, the Lakers have had an impressive start to the season under first-year head coach JJ Reddick. However, they will need to regroup after squandering a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, where they were outscored by 11 points.

As the NBA season progresses, Banchero’s remarkable performance and the ongoing battles between teams like the Celtics, Bucks, Suns, and Lakers continue to keep fans on the edge of their seats, promising an exciting season ahead.
