Steph Curry and Draymond Green fail to score single field goal in Golden State Warriors’ 51-point loss to Memphis Grizzlies
4 min readIn a historic NBA game on Thursday, both Steph Curry and Draymond Green failed to score a field goal for the first time in their careers, as the Golden State Warriors were handed a devastating 144-93 loss by the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies’ 51-point margin of victory marked the largest win in the NBA this season, and the team also set a franchise record with 27 three-pointers made.
Curry, who is known for his scoring prowess, finished the game with just two points, all of which came from free throws. He went 0-of-7 from the field and missed all six of his three-point attempts. Green, typically a strong contributor to the team in both scoring and defense, had a similarly frustrating night, shooting 0-of-4 and finishing with zero points. After the game, Curry reflected on the loss, saying, “First time for everything, right? I never thought that would be a situation or a result of the game. From the very jump, they kind of punched us in the mouth. We didn’t have an answer. That was kind of embarrassing.”
When Green was made aware of his and Curry’s lackluster performance, he responded with disbelief, saying, “Damn, that happened? Oh sh*t. That’s crazy … they did a good job. Give them some credit.”
The Warriors, who started the season strong with a 12-3 record, have been struggling lately, losing nine of their last 11 games. This loss dropped them to 14-12, and they now sit in 10th place in the Western Conference. Dennis Schroder, who was acquired in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets, also had a tough debut, scoring just five points on 2-of-12 shooting.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr was clearly shaken by the magnitude of the loss. “It was just a humbling night all around,” Kerr said. “I mean, they took it to us. They were great. We just couldn’t get anything going. You lose by 51. That’s humbling. So what I know about this team, this is the second time we’ve been blown out. We got blown out in Cleveland early in the season, so I know who we are. I know what our team is about. I know we’ve got competitors. I know we’re going to bounce back and we’re going to regroup, so I’m not concerned about that. But we’ve got a lot of work to do to execute.”
Meanwhile, the Grizzlies are continuing their rise in the Western Conference, with 11 wins in their last 13 games. They now occupy the second seed in the West, and their performance against the Warriors showcased their impressive depth. Santi Aldama led the charge with 21 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists. Six Grizzlies players finished with double-digit points, although Ja Morant, one of their star players, only managed nine points. The Grizzlies’ success comes amid controversy surrounding their relationship with the Warriors, as the teams have been linked to a potential playoff matchup.
In another exciting NBA game on Thursday, Karl-Anthony Towns returned to Minnesota for the first time since being traded to the New York Knicks, receiving a standing ovation before putting on a dominant performance. Towns led the Knicks to a 133-107 victory over his former team, the Timberwolves, scoring 32 points on 10-of-12 shooting, including a perfect 5-of-5 from beyond the arc. He also grabbed 20 rebounds and added six assists and two steals. Mikal Bridges added 29 points, six rebounds, and six assists for the Knicks, who have won seven of their last nine games and are currently third in the Eastern Conference. For the Timberwolves, Julius Randle, who was also traded in the same deal, led the team with 24 points.
Elsewhere, Victor Wembanyama continued to impress in only his second season, scoring 42 points and leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 133-126 overtime victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Wembanyama added six rebounds, five assists, four blocks, and two steals, showcasing his all-around skills. De’Andre Hunter led the Hawks with 27 points, while Trae Young had 23 points and 16 assists.
