Superstar outfielder Juan Soto agrees to historic deal with the New York Mets, per reports
2 min readJuan Soto, the superstar outfielder, has reportedly agreed to a historic 15-year, $765 million contract with the New York Mets, making it the largest deal in Major League Baseball history. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the contract also includes escalators that could push its value beyond $800 million. This agreement not only eclipses all previous MLB contracts but is also considered the biggest in professional sports overall. CNN has reached out to both the Mets and Soto’s representatives for further confirmation.
At 26 years old, Soto is now the highest-paid player in baseball, surpassing Shohei Ohtani’s ten-year, $700 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which was signed in December 2023. However, Ohtani’s contract is structured differently, with over 97% of the money deferred until the final years of the agreement, as reported by sources familiar with the deal.
Before the 2023 season, Soto was traded from the San Diego Padres to the New York Yankees, where he delivered one of his finest seasons in his seven-year career. The four-time All-Star hit 41 home runs, drove in 109 RBIs, and posted a .288 batting average. His performance helped the Yankees reach the World Series for the first time since 2009, though they ultimately lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Soto’s remarkable season earned him a third-place finish in the American League MVP voting, behind his former Yankees teammate Aaron Judge and Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr.
Soto’s move to the Mets places him in the same lineup as Francisco Lindor, the National League MVP runner-up. This pairing could significantly strengthen the Mets’ roster as they look to build on their recent success. The Mets had an unexpected postseason run last year but were eliminated in the National League Championship Series by the Dodgers.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Mets are preparing for spring training, which begins on February 22 with a game against the Houston Astros at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The regular season is set to kick off on March 27 when the Mets face the Astros in Houston.
With Soto’s arrival, the Mets have further solidified their intentions to contend for a championship in the near future, adding one of baseball’s brightest stars to their already talented roster. His presence, combined with the leadership of Lindor and a promising pitching staff, raises expectations for the team’s performance in the coming seasons. This blockbuster deal is a statement move by the Mets, showing their commitment to building a championship-caliber team for years to come.
