Tearful Ons Jabeur struggles with breathing problems during Australian Open win

3 min read

Ons Jabeur fought through breathing difficulties to secure a win in the second round of the Australian Open, defeating Colombia’s Camila Osorio 7-5, 6-3. The win saw Jabeur, who had previously reached three Grand Slam finals, advance to the third round despite struggling with severe physical discomfort throughout the match.

The 30-year-old Tunisian player became emotional during a medical timeout early in the first set. Leading 2-1, Jabeur broke down in tears, explaining later that she was battling significant respiratory issues. “It was very, very tough to breathe,” Jabeur shared with reporters after the match. “When I was younger, I was diagnosed with asthma. Having to cough a lot didn’t help, and I think it provoked it even more. It was tough to play, I had to shorten the rallies.”

Jabeur’s respiratory issues have plagued her since childhood, and despite the use of an inhaler during the match, she reported no noticeable improvement. She added that this condition made it especially difficult to compete in long rallies, forcing her to modify her usual playing style. In addition to asthma, the Tunisian star’s injury problems kept her sidelined for much of the previous season, which caused her ranking to drop to No. 39.

In the match against Osorio, Jabeur found herself needing to adapt in order to keep the contest under control. Despite her physical challenges, she powered through the first set, which saw Osorio break back to 5-5 after Jabeur’s medical timeout. However, Jabeur broke her opponent’s serve immediately afterward and clinched the first set after Osorio sent a forehand long. The 30-year-old was visibly relieved to have taken the first set, noting how crucial it was for her confidence.

The second set proved to be more straightforward for Jabeur, who broke Osorio’s serve at 3-2. This allowed her to take control of the match, closing it out in one hour and 36 minutes. After the match, Jabeur apologized to her opponent for her on-court behavior, acknowledging how difficult it had been to cope with the breathing issues. “I apologized to Osorio at the end of the match because I didn’t want to behave like this on the court,” Jabeur explained. “I tried to manage through. Luckily, I was playing really well, which helped me a lot.”

Despite the challenges she faced during the match, Jabeur’s determination and ability to find ways around her breathing problems allowed her to secure the win. She reflected on the match, stating that if she had lost the first set, continuing would have been much harder, and she might have struggled to finish the match. Jabeur’s ability to stay focused and battle through the discomfort earned her praise, as she fought not only against her opponent but also against her physical limitations.

Looking ahead, Jabeur will face American eighth seed Emma Navarro in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday. This upcoming match will be another test for Jabeur, who will need to manage her breathing issues while continuing to perform at a high level. Despite the challenges, Jabeur’s resilience and tenacity remain clear, and fans are eager to see how she progresses in the tournament.

As the Australian Open continues, Jabeur’s progress will be closely watched, especially as she works through her ongoing health challenges. Her success in overcoming these issues during her win against Osorio demonstrates her determination and commitment to her career, and her fans are hopeful that she will continue to fight through adversity as the tournament moves forward.
