Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy watch on as The Bay Golf Club wins opening match of high-tech indoor TGL golf league
3 min readThe long-awaited inaugural match of the Tech-infused Golf League (TGL) kicked off on Tuesday, marking the launch of a groundbreaking, high-tech indoor golf league aimed at revolutionizing the sport. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, the co-founders of the league’s parent company, TMRW Sports, were in attendance, witnessing history as the opening match unfolded.
The Bay Golf Club, featuring golfers Ludvig Åberg, Shane Lowry, and Wyndham Clark, dominated the match against New York Golf Club, represented by Xander Schauffele, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Rickie Fowler. The Bay Golf Club triumphed with a commanding 9-2 victory over the course of 15 holes at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
The atmosphere was anything but traditional, with an electrifying start to the match. The event had been delayed for a year, and the proceedings were briefly held up when Lowry, in his typical good-natured fashion, forgot to bring a tee for the opening shot. Once that minor hiccup was resolved, Lowry made his first tee shot into the massive screen and down the fairway, bringing the crowd to life.
The Bay Golf Club wasted no time asserting its dominance, quickly building a 6-0 lead. Lowry, in particular, stood out during the match, clinching the win on the par-five 10th hole. After Lowry triumphed over Fowler, making the score 7-1 with five holes remaining, the outcome was all but decided. The final few holes were more of a formality as The Bay Golf Club continued to pull ahead.
As expected, the TGL match showcased a vibrant departure from the usual stoic nature of traditional golf. Players were mic’d up throughout the competition, allowing the crowd to hear their interactions. Lowry quickly became the star of the show with his infectious personality, often cracking jokes, including his now-famous quip, “I’m going to be the Scottie Scheffler of indoor golf,” a nod to the top-ranked golfer’s reputation.
The atmosphere was further elevated with loud music, smoke cannons, and dramatic player introductions, reminiscent of the grand entrances seen in boxing. Spectators were treated to several humorous moments, including when Fowler mischievously threw a flag onto the green in an attempt to disrupt Lowry’s shot, a playful act given The Bay Golf Club’s victory was already secured.
Woods and McIlroy, two of golf’s biggest names, were in the spotlight as the co-founders of TMRW Sports, which was responsible for conceptualizing the new format. Both were visibly excited about the debut of the TGL, with Woods even joining the broadcast at points to express his thoughts. “This was just a dream conjured up,” Woods said. “Rory and I were talking about it; it’s hard to believe that dream came into reality, and we were able to take golf into another stratosphere, really.”
Woods emphasized that while TGL is a departure from traditional golf, it still embodies the essence of the sport. “It’s not traditional golf, yes, but it is golf. And that’s the main thing,” Woods said.
Following the match, the players reflected on the exciting experience. Lowry admitted to having “an amazing two hours” of fun. He likened the enjoyment to his memorable experience during the 2023 Ryder Cup, where he helped lead Team Europe to victory. “The last time I’ve had that much fun was probably last September,” Lowry said.
Åberg, who was also part of the victorious European Ryder Cup team, shared similar sentiments. “It was awesome,” the Swede said. “I always said I was so jealous of basketball and football players because they get to do this a lot, and we don’t. So this whole stadium-like feel is awesome to be a part of, and it gets you going a little bit differently from a normal golf tournament.”
The debut match served as a resounding success for TGL, signaling a new chapter for the sport. The next game will take place on January 14, with the Los Angeles Golf Club facing off against Jupiter Links Golf Club, where Woods is expected to make his TGL debut.
As the league continues to evolve, Woods and McIlroy are setting the stage for golf’s modernization, blending tradition with innovation, and offering a new, exciting experience for both players and fans alike.
