Tagovailoa walks off of the field with Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel against the Bills.

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is focusing on recovery and staying positive after his most recent concussion, according to head coach Mike McDaniel. Tagovailoa, who has endured several concussions in his NFL career, is taking things “day by day” as he works through the concussion protocol.

The latest concussion occurred during a game against the Buffalo Bills when Tagovailoa attempted to secure a first down and was hit by Bills safety Damar Hamlin. Despite the severity of the hit, Tagovailoa managed to walk off the field unaided. However, his return to play remains uncertain.

Coach McDaniel provided an update on Tagovailoa’s condition, noting that the quarterback is diligently working with trainers and medical staff. “He’s in the concussion protocol and we’re taking it one day at a time,” McDaniel said. “He’s feeling good, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to a clear medical assessment. I rely on the results of medical examinations rather than just my interactions with him. It’s encouraging to see him in good spirits, and his teammates are excited to see him back.”

According to NFL protocols, a player with a concussion must go through a five-step process before they can return to practice. This process considers the player’s history of concussions and the potential risks of further head injuries. Given Tagovailoa’s concussion history, particularly from the previous season, there has been public speculation about whether he should consider retirement.

Mike McDaniel has been Tua Tagovailoa’s head coach since being given the Dolphins job in 2022.

Despite this speculation, sources informed NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that Tagovailoa has no intention of retiring. He is reportedly focused on returning to the field when he is fully ready. its was said help  reached out to Tagovailoa’s representatives for confirmation but did not receive a response, and the Dolphins chose not to comment on the situation.

Coach McDaniel emphasized that the focus should be on Tagovailoa’s well-being rather than speculation about his career. “It’s most important for Tua to speak on his own career,” McDaniel said. “Reports are just reports. My concern is with Tua as a person and how he’s progressing each day. He will be the one to decide and communicate his future in the sport.”

As part of his recovery, Tagovailoa will be evaluated by independent concussion specialists. McDaniel indicated that it is too early to determine whether Tagovailoa will be placed on the injured reserve list.

In the meantime, the Dolphins have made some adjustments to their quarterback roster. After Tagovailoa’s departure from the game, backup quarterback Skylar Thompson took over. Additionally, the Dolphins have signed veteran quarterback Tim Boyle and acquired Tyler Huntley from the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad to bolster their options. Huntley, who was recently released by the Cleveland Browns, had previously spent four seasons with the Ravens.

McDaniel explained that the addition of Boyle and Huntley provides depth to the quarterback position. “Adding Boyle was about enhancing our quarterback depth,” he said. “Bringing in Huntley, who has starting experience, adds another experienced option to support Skylar and contribute to the team. This move is about depth and competition in the quarterback room.”

With Tagovailoa’s status still uncertain, Skylar Thompson is set to be the starting quarterback for the Dolphins’ upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on Saturday. The team will continue to monitor Tagovailoa’s recovery closely and provide updates as necessary.
