Adrian Newey, one of Formula 1’s most esteemed car designers, is set to join Aston Martin on a lucrative deal that could see him earning up to £30 million annually, including bonuses and additional perks. This salary is substantial for an engineer, but Newey’s exceptional skills justify the investment.

Newey’s earnings are reportedly higher than most F1 drivers, except for top stars like Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, and Lando Norris. In the broader spectrum of British sports figures, Newey’s salary places him behind names such as Anthony Joshua, Rory McIlroy, and Tyson Fury, as per Forbes.

At 65, Newey’s compensation is eye-catching, but many believe it’s a fair reflection of his unparalleled expertise. Regarded as the greatest car designer in F1 history, his track record includes 13 drivers’ championships and 12 constructors’ titles across three different teams, with his career gaining momentum since 1988.

Yet, Newey’s value extends beyond statistics. His unique qualities and vision have made him a sought-after talent. Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll is betting that Newey’s involvement will complement their significant investment in facilities and staff, which has already surpassed hundreds of millions of pounds. Stroll believes Newey is the missing piece needed to transform his team into title contenders within a few years.

The cost of hiring Newey is high, but his track record offers a near-guarantee of success in F1. His expertise lies in deciphering complex technical regulations to unlock peak performance, with a particular focus on aerodynamics—a critical factor in F1.

What sets Newey apart is his extraordinary ability to envision airflow dynamics. As an aerodynamicist, he doesn’t just apply physics and analyze wind tunnel data; he mentally visualizes how air moves around the car and how various flows interact. In a 2022 interview, Newey explained that he could “picture” airflow, which he sees as one of his strengths. This ability is rare and, by his own admission, somewhat unique.

Newey’s designs often set new trends, especially during periods of regulatory changes, such as the major shifts seen in 2010-2013 with Red Bull and again with the 2022 regulations. With another significant regulation change slated for 2026, Newey will join Aston Martin in March next year, perfectly timed to influence their design strategy for the new era.

Red Bull’s dominance in 2023, including Max Verstappen’s record-breaking 19 wins and the team’s 21 victories out of 22 grands prix, demonstrated Newey’s impact. However, their performance has waned since Newey’s reduced involvement after early May, following his negotiated early exit from Red Bull. While Red Bull downplays the connection, it’s challenging to ignore the potential impact of losing such a pivotal engineer.

Newey’s role in Red Bull’s success was evident when the team excelled under the new regulations introduced in 2022. These rules reintroduced venturi underfloors, a technology from the early 1980s, requiring precise aerodynamic and suspension adjustments. Newey’s innovative approach included reversing traditional suspension designs—front pull-rod and rear push-rod setups—proving instrumental in Red Bull’s success. His sophisticated underfloor design left competitors in awe and set the stage for a period of dominance.

There were smiles after Red Bull’s victory in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in March but tension has been building between team principal Christian Horner and Newey.

Newey’s genius lies not only in his design innovation but also in his practical understanding of car dynamics. He focuses on achieving optimal performance consistently, rather than chasing peak figures that might create an unpredictable car. His approach ensures that a car remains competitive throughout various conditions.

The impact of Newey’s move to Aston Martin is yet to be fully realized. His departure from Red Bull was partly influenced by dissatisfaction with controversies involving team principal Christian Horner and internal tensions over credit for car success. Newey’s influence within Red Bull was significant, even if he was not full-time, and his visionary input was crucial to their competitive edge.

Despite considering retirement, Newey remains deeply committed to F1. He had discussions with Ferrari but ultimately chose Aston Martin, which boasts a new facility, substantial resources, a strong engineering team, and a partnership with Honda starting in 2026. Moreover, he will work alongside Fernando Alonso, one of the sport’s greatest drivers, with whom he has long desired to collaborate.

Newey’s decision to continue working at 65 underscores his passion for F1 and his drive to remain at the forefront of the sport. As he embarks on this new chapter with Aston Martin, the F1 world eagerly anticipates the impact of his continued genius and innovation.
