Hamas releases four Israeli soldiers in prisoner swap

2 min read

Hamas released four Israeli soldiers to the Red Cross in exchange for 200 Palestinian prisoners, marking the second swap since a ceasefire began last weekend.

Hamas militants released four Israeli soldiers on Saturday after holding them captive for 15 months. The female soldiers were transferred to the Red Cross as part of a planned prisoner swap, with Hamas seeking the release of 200 Palestinian detainees held in Israel. This marks the second such exchange since a fragile ceasefire was established last weekend, which paused the fighting in Gaza for at least six weeks.

In Tel Aviv, crowds gathered in a central square to celebrate the release. People cheered and clapped as a large screen displayed the images of the four hostages being handed over to the Red Cross in the Gaza Strip. Some in the crowd wore bright yellow T-shirts emblazoned with the message “You are not alone,” a symbol of support for the soldiers and their families.

Red Cross vehicles were also spotted outside Ofer prison in the West Bank, where Palestinian detainees are held, as part of the logistical arrangements for the swap.

The prisoner exchange is viewed as another critical moment in the ongoing truce between Israel and Hamas. The ceasefire aims to bring an end to the deadly and devastating conflict, which has been the most destructive war ever fought between Israel and the militant group. The ceasefire has brought temporary relief to the region, but the situation remains tense, with both sides looking to negotiate further exchanges and a longer-term resolution.
