MP Allocates Sh8 Million for Youth Driving School Scholarships

2 min read

Dr. Joshua Oron, the Member of Parliament for Kisumu Central, has initiated a Sh8 million scholarship program to fund driving school courses for local youth. This initiative underscores Dr. Oron’s commitment to fulfilling his promises to his constituents in Kisumu Central.

The scholarship is designed to train 400 young individuals in driving skills, aiming to enhance their employability and equip them with valuable vocational training. The program is a collaborative effort with three driving schools across the constituency, ensuring comprehensive coverage and access to training for all eligible participants.

Dr. Oron emphasized the dual focus of this initiative: not only does it provide practical skills, but it also forms part of a broader education and empowerment scheme. “Our goal is to help both men and women who are interested in driving as a profession,” he stated. He expressed hope that the skills gained will lead to job placements across various sectors.

Nicholas Otieno, Director of SHAPPIN Driving School and Chairman of the Kenya Driving School Association for the Nyanza Region, has committed to ensuring the success of the training program. Otieno pledged that each participant would receive a driving license upon completion of the course. He also highlighted that the entire program is financed through the NG-CDF (National Government Constituencies Development Fund) and urged beneficiaries to fully engage and attend their classes.

In addition to supporting the driving school initiative, Dr. Oron has also promised to assist graduates in finding job opportunities within the Kisumu County government. His dedication to education and community development is further demonstrated by several ongoing projects. Notably, he has already implemented various educational improvements within Kisumu Central and is planning to establish a girls’ Day Secondary School in the constituency. Currently, there are only two girls’ boarding schools in the area, and there is also a need for a Mixed Secondary School in Kanyakwar, which lacks secondary school facilities altogether. The groundbreaking for the Kanyakwar school is scheduled to take place in the next four weeks.

Looking ahead, Dr. Oron has announced plans to launch a Sh20 million health project in the coming two months. This project, funded by the Ministry of Health, will involve the construction of a new health facility in the Jua Kali area of Kisumu town, aiming to improve local healthcare services.

Furthermore, Dr. Oron’s office has confirmed that 1,067 students will receive bursaries for university education, and an additional 700 individuals will be supported to enroll in various colleges. This funding is also provided through the Kisumu Central NG-CDF, reflecting a strong commitment to educational support and development in the community.

Overall, Dr. Oron’s comprehensive approach to youth empowerment, education, and health reflects his ongoing dedication to improving the lives of his constituents in Kisumu Central.
