Sir Keir Starmer will preside over the government’s Cobra emergency response group on Monday in an effort to quell far right violence, as the home secretary assured that rioters will be met with “prompt justice”.
The government has activated courts and assigned extra prosecutors to hasten the handling of rioters apprehended over the weekend, as stated by Yvette Cooper.
Halting the violence, which was initially triggered by mass stabbings in Southport a week ago, presents the inaugural substantial challenge for Starmer’s Labour government following its election triumph a month ago.
The number of arrests soared to 420 by Sunday night, following unrest in over a dozen cities and towns involving clashes between police and protesters, looting of shops, and attacks on hotels housing asylum seekers.
“We anticipate swift justice to be delivered,” Cooper remarked on Monday. “We anticipate these cases to be brought before the court this week,” she declared on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
When questioned about the potential deployment of the British Army to contain further unrest, Cooper emphasized that the police possess the “proficiency and the authority to handle public disorder and criminal activities, as this constitutes criminal behavior.” She added that there were “significant supplementary policing resources that forces can request assistance from” if violent confrontations persist.
